Baking and cooking can be very therapeutic for home cooks. Who doesn’t love the smell of freshly-baked bread and cookies, especially in the morning? How about hearing your family’s praises after devouring their favorite sinigang (sour broth), kaldereta (meat stew) or adobo? Or unleashing your creativity in plating dishes and decorating cakes?

Yes, the kitchen can be a happy and rewarding place to be. Oh yes, it can also be quite challenging, especially if you do not have the right tools and utensils handy. Here are the basic tools that you need to equip your kitchen to make your cooking and baking life a breeze:

• Hand or stand mixer - for making cakes, cookies, bread, eggs, pancakes, whipped cream
• Blender - for smoothies, shakes. nuts, oreos, graham crackers, pie crusts, sauces and dips
• Rice cooker - for that perfect rice, steamed dishes, risotto, soup

• Baking/sheet pans - roast chicken, fish, vegetables, cookies, cakes, puff pastries, bread, macaroons
• Baking dish - buttered fish, garlic prawns, chicken parmesan, eggplant parmigiana, lasagna, macaroni, casseroles

• Stock pot - for cooking pasta, noodles, chicken/pork/beef stock, and of course, your favorite Filipino dishes like chicken sopas, nilaga, sinigang, tinola, bulalo, lugaw, papaitan and arroz caldo
• Stew pot - for cooking more favorites like adobo, kaldereta, mechado, menudo, kare-kare, afritada, dinuguan, pochero, munggo, curry and ginataan
• Non-stick saute pan - pancit/noodles, stir-fried veggies, eggs, fried rice, fries, anything fried!
